How many licks…?
Today, the two-year-old found a Tootsie Roll Pop that his sister had left lying around the house. Familiar with suckers, he made it clear that he wanted it. At first, I was a bit leery, lest he choke or something on the Tootsie Roll center. Then I remembered this.
The Dungeons & Dragons cartoon was contemporaneous with my childhood, but the commercial is much older. It dates from the 1960s, and you can still see it on television today.
Serious blast from the past there! I still say “One, two-hooo, three” (with the owl’s inflection) and “The world may never know” from time to time. Scary how deeply ingrained that stuff is! (And how many situations such phrases seem to fit…)
I think the only commercial from my childhood that I know better than this one is the Oscar Meyer Weiner commercial — which also still appears on TV from time to time.
“Oh, I wish I were an Oscar Meyer Weeee-nur …!”
I wish advertisers would go back to writing goofy commercial jingles. That remains a good way to get people to remember the name of a product.
Tootsie Roll Pops are in my desk drawer, in a cup on our front desk for guests to take, at the bottom of my purse…I LOVE ‘EM! Thanks for reminding me of this great spot!!!
