Influence of classic advertisements on five-year-olds

At supper last night, our daughter took a big bite and then exclaimed, “Mama Mia! That’s a spicy pizza!”
Talk about timing! We had meatballs Saturday night, and I actually said the “Mama Mia” thing. To which my husband replied, “I can’t believe you bother to store that old commercial in your memory.”
Sea, that slogan appears to have become an obscure but resilient piece of the popular culture consciousness. Our daughter said she got the quote from one of her preschool friends, who in turn heard it from his father. The father is, like me, too young to have ever seen this ad on broadcast television. The cultural reference is to something from my daughters’ grandparents time! (Similar are the Laugh-In parodies from Sid the Science Kid.)
(My own knowledge of the commercial came from seeing it on one of the classic commercial reels at the advertising museum in Portland, Oregon. They also had the Chinese baby with Jell-o ad, and a disconcerting number of ads for Benson & Hedges cigarettes–from back when there were television ads for tobacco. I hypothesized that one of the curators must have been a fanatical chain smoker of that brand.)
“Mamma Mia” I need some Spaghetti & Meatballs NOW!!! Pizza will do…with a side of kerplunk!
Oh my, I think I remember this one! (I am 46, gulp)
GREAT Erica, “F” is yours. The Picnic Game is really heating up. I’m having a Blast! (Although I’m not sure an online picnic game at this point in my life should be considered such:) Ah the heck with it! I’m having fun and it appears others are too!!! How would you feel about taking the letter “E”? The reason I ask is because then all the letters from A-H will be spoken for. Also, there’s been a little change. Since everyone is waiting on someone to post before them, (isn’t that always the way, I actually started this picnic game with someone else who had to back out at the last minute) feel free to grab the logo and post your “F” recipe whenever you like. (Hopefully the “E” also:) it would also be GREAT if you would include the words I’m going on a picnic and I’m bringing… Some people have needed to be reminded that it is indeed a Picnic Day Game. Thanks so much Erica. I really appreciate it. Rain or Shine, We’re going on a picnic!!!
