Did he say only 10 and a half inches high?

My grandparents had this blender!

That is really funny! The spinning GE logo at the beginning is great. The whole commercial looks like something out of 30 Rock. (I can only assume that the height obsession has to do with fitting the appliance in a cramped kitchen, possibly on a counter below a very low bank of cabinets.)

And one of my grandmothers—no, actually both of my grandmothers!—had a blender like this as well. I don’t think they were quite this model. They were probably a little later, but they were made by GE and looked very much like the one in the commercial.

First, I’m struck by how LONG the commercial is. VERY long by modern standards.

Second — WHY did they need a (very lame) jingle to sell the thing?

Third — You can make MEATLOAF with a blender? Really?

Sea, the silly jingle is the best part! How else would they get you interested — it is a blender commercial, after all.

I dunno about the meatloaf idea. It would be very messy, unnecessarily difficult, and it actually might not blend all that thoroughly (ground beef doesn’t even mix well in a food processor, which has more room for mixing). But who am I to question a commercial with music that cool?

Ground meat these days does not blend well because of all the extra sinew and muscle they mix in with it. Now you know…

  5. Buzz Says:

Peter, are you claiming that decades ago, there was less connective tissue in ground beef? To quote Ralph Kramden from one of the very first episodes of the Honeymooners: “It’s A & P hamburger. It has very little meat in it!”

Actually, you said extra “extra… muscle,” so I don’t know what you might be trying to say.
