Signs of a Blocked Root Chakra

A healthy root chakra brings willpower, energy, and vitality. Those with a balanced root chakra see life as an exciting adventure, like a game or a dream, and can overcome any obstacles.

However, an imbalanced root chakra leads to decreased vitality and struggles with daily activities. People with a blocked root chakra may exhibit abusive behavior, depression, or a lack of enjoyment in life.

Signs of blocked muladhara energy

Individuals who possess a dysfunctional Muladhara, or Root chakra, may exhibit various negative behaviors and experiences. These can manifest as abusive tendencies towards others, feelings of depression, and a sense of being deprived of the joys that life has to offer. Additionally, due to its proximity to the sacral chakra Swadisthana, an imbalanced Muladhara can also lead to sexual disorders such as frigidity, impotence, and sterility. Furthermore, this imbalance can give rise to a range of physical ailments including bladder disease, cystitis, prostate disease, inflammation of the hemorrhoids, and in severe cases, colon cancer.

There are several other signs that may indicate an imbalanced Root chakra. These include difficulties in saving money, chronic health problems, a lack of healthy boundaries with others, poor communication with loved ones, a sensation of being out of place or disconnected, eating disorders or loss of appetite, a lack of energy, a pervasive sense of fear, materialism and greed, an obsession with money, chronic fatigue, an identity crisis, little interest in intimate or physical relations with a partner, linking one's sense of well-being to external factors, and a general lack of confidence.

Physical signs

When your first chakra is out of alignment, you may experience pain in your intestines and lower body. This misalignment can manifest in the physical body in a number of ways.

What Causes a Blocked Root Chakra?

1. Childhood trauma
2. Poor mother-child relationship
3. Impatience
4. Financial difficulties
5. Poverty
6. Physical abuse
7. Physical neglect
8. Fear of change
9. Selfishness

The root chakra connects us to the subtle energies of creation and the earth. It is linked to our individuality, existence, and physical sensations.

Each chakra has a specific color and vibration. The Muladhara chakra has the lowest vibration and is represented by the colors red, orange, and yellow.

The root chakra is associated with the element of earth, which connects us to nature. It also represents our desire for depth in everything we create or possess. This chakra is about feeling connected to the earth and to others, being part of a family, society, and humanity, and communicating with all beings on earth.

If the root chakra is not functioning properly, we may feel empty and disconnected from everything and everyone. This can lead to feelings of loneliness and not fitting in.

The Ganesha goddess, depicted as an elephant with seven trumpets, is associated with the root chakra. It represents the minerals necessary for sustaining physical life. Above the elephant, there is an upside-down red triangle symbolizing feminine creation. Inside the triangle, you will find a phallus with a snake wrapped around it.

This represents the dormant energy known as Kundalini. Above the phallus, there is a new moon symbolizing the Divine Source of all energies.

Mental signs

When working with the root chakra, think about your relationship to yourself and the world around you. Where do you feel grounded? When do you feel calm and stable? When your root chakra is blocked, you might experience some of the following:

  • Increased distractibility
  • Rushing from one task to another
  • Feeling exhausted or lethargic
  • Increased feelings of anxiety, stress or depression
  • Feeling stuck
  • Inability to take action

The benefits of balancing the root chakra

As you work to align the root chakra, you will allow energy to flow freely through your body, establishing your connection to the earth and your surroundings. You may feel an increased attachment to yourself and your home as you ground yourself—physically, mentally and emotionally.

Reasons to align your root chakra

When your first chakra is aligned, you’ll be able to tap into its ability to support a calm and steady energy throughout your body. You’ll feel grounded and comfortably situated in your body and the world around you. Stress about your sense of place and belonging will dissipate. When you can be assured that your basic needs are met, you’ll be able to focus on your relationships and personal goals.
